The vivacious lady I knew as Aunty Rita from Vienna was the daughter of my grandfather's best friend, Bruno Streich, his fellow prisoner in POW camps at Murmansk and, after 1917, at Barnaul in the Siberian Altai Region. She was born there in 1920. I last saw her after she sang a
Lieder concert in London's Wigmore Hall during the late 1970s. While she gave me a warm hug backstage, I noticed the actor Edward Fox standing behind me with a bunch of roses. I felt I was upstaging 'The Jackal'!
